Martin Hongla Relegated Twice in The Same Season?

The 25-year-old started the season at Italian side Hellas Verona after his 1-year loan from Belgian Antwerp was made permanent. Things wouldn't go as planned for Hongla and Verona, as he made just 9 appearances in total. The midfielder signed a 6-month loan with Valladolid in January as they braced for a relegation battle.

Martin Hongla's Valladolid career started encouragingly as his arrival coincided with a run of just four defeats in eleven games, and Hongla played a vital role in that run, switching between Midfield and Defence. Hongla was even voted Vallodolid's best player for April 2023.

Valladolid couldn't sustain their good form and will eventually get relegated from the Spanish first division, failing to beat relegation rivals Getafe on the final matchday of the season.

Hongla's Shot At Redemption.

Hongla has returned to his parent Club Hellas Verona with the Italian side enduring an equally torrid season. Marco Zaffaroni's team finished 18th in the Italian Seria A with 31 points and will now have the chance to avoid relegation via a relegation playoff with 17 placed Spezia (also 31 points). This will be Hongla's shot at redemption after a very disappointing season overall.

The Cameroon International will be hoping for better fortunes with his Italian team after the heartbreak of relegation in Spain. Verona faces Spezia at a neutral venue next weekend.
